How to Set and Achieve 2023 Goals

Fall is such a beautiful time of year. We have some of the most beautiful fall colors here in the Seacoast. It also tends to be a busy time for businesses and families as we approach the holiday season. As a business owner, October is the perfect time to review your business goals and set new ones for 2023.
Here, I’ll share a simple framework that you and any key stakeholders can work through to create achievable goals for 2023 (and beyond). Before we can set new goals, we’ll need to review our current ones and look for any areas we need to focus on.

Try to set aside a couple of interrupted hours to work through this process. Document your answers in a way that’s easy for you to view throughout the year.

Reviewing Your 2022 Business Goals

Take some time to sit and review your goals, preferably with any other key stakeholders in your business. Review each goal, one at a time, and gauge if you’re on track or not. No matter what, it’s important to think about why your goal is on track or not.

Action Step - Print out your 2022 goals or set them up on your computer with no other open tabs. Review each goal and write down any notes or thoughts about that specific goal.

Plan 2023 Goals

Now it’s time to set your 2023 business goals. You can take what you’ve learned from reviewing your goals and set SMART Goals for the upcoming year. Of course, SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely).

I usually recommend setting 3-5 SMART Goals each year focusing on a different area of your business. Here are a few categories to choose

Business Goal Categories

  • Revenue Goals

  • Financial Planning

  • Talent/Team Management

  • Customer Service

  • Sales and Marketing

Action Step - Write down a SMART Goal from each category above that applies to your business. Again, feel free to write these down on paper or a document on your computer.

Create Business Budget

With your goals in mind, we can create your business budget. Don't feel intimidated by a business budget! I've had many clients dread creating a business budget and feel empowered once it's implemented in their business. Without a business budget, you don't know where your money is going and why. Instead, think of it like giving your money a job to do. Every dollar has an essential role in your business, so give it the right job!

Action Step - Print out all your expenses from the past year and review each to ensure they are accurate and necessary. After that's complete, this will be your budget outline for next year.

2023 (and beyond) Strategic Planning

A strategic plan is a roadmap for your business. Create a strategic plan based on where your business will be in five, ten, or even twenty years. Below are four questions to ask yourself. Your answers to these are a great start to your strategic plan.

  1. What are your mission and vision statements?

  2. What are your 2023 goals?

  3. What are your KPIs for the 2023 goals?

  4. Please share any long-term plans for the business

Action Step - Write down your answers to the four questions above. Your answers will be your roadmap as you continue to grow the business.
